Ethernet is the most widely used physical transport medium for local area networks (LANs). Based on IEEE 802.3, it makes use of a bus topology to transfer data. Mac OS X supports standard Ethernet (10 Mbit/s), Fast Ethernet (100 Mbit/s), and Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbit/s). All current Macintosh hardware supports standard and Fast Ethernet, and some newer hardware supports Gigabit Ethernet. Developers can use Ethernet to take advantage of existing Ethernet networks or to enable networking at higher speeds than may be available using wireless networks.
